Back in 2018, it was reported that 44 million people in the U.S had a side hustle (Inc.com). Ladies and Gentleman, it’s going on 2020 which means: EVERYBODY either has a side hustle (I hope so), starting their own business and (should) have multiple streams of income...so I know the numbers have jumped tremendously!
Here’s the thing though, if you have a full-time job, there are boundaries you have to create because side hustles can be distracting, time consuming and it’s a commitment on top of your 9-5. By no means are we talking you out of your side hustle, we are here for the multiple streams of income! But it’s important to know it takes discipline because mastering your side hustle before (and after) your 9-5 is no easy task.
Start by knowing what your side hustle requires - understand how much time you need to invest, when projects are due, what’s the best time to work, etc. It’s important to know your expectations and your ability to work around that. We believe in finishing anything we start!
Prioritize, stay on track and if you can, delegate task. Delegating task will take a number of things off your to-do list, but many of us don’t have a team and that’s when prioritizing is key. Sacrifice is another major key. This could have different meanings for different people but one common sacrifice is time. We all get 24 hours in a day so how exactly will you use your time to be productive?
Create a schedule that works for you. Think of times throughout the day to work on your side hustle and get through your to-do list. Consider waking up 2 hours early, during your commute, during your lunch break and definitely once you get home. If your work day ends at 5, typically, your side hustle clock-in time is about ummm, 6pm - until. Which means it’ll be many late nights and early mornings. But hey, go hard or go home, right?
News flash: just because it’s the weekend, it doesn’t mean working stops. You have a full 24 hours to be productive, to create, to sell, to perfect your craft and to be fully engaged with your side hustle. We see no lie in: “the grind don’t stop.”
The weekend is the perfect time to get A LOT done during the day and still enjoy your night out. Use the weekend to create marketing and promotional materials, write blogs, introductory/networking emails and social media content for the upcoming week. This brings me to the next point of generating automatic social post - scheduled post. Create them now and send them later! Trust me, there are ways to work your business without working in the moment.
The goal is to be great at two things, your 9-5 and your side hustle which means you have to flawlessly balance your time and your priorities. You can’t be half present at work, meaning if you can’t be a top performer while also committing to a side hustle, you definitely need to re-evaluate priorities and time management. When you’re at work, focus on work; your role, company objectives, due dates and so on. We recommend NOT working on your side hustle at work. Stay focused and on track! Remember, we need this 9-5 to help fund the dream! So, work hard, efficiently and stay committed.
The greatest investment you can make is in yourself. What are you changing in 2020 to efficiently manage your side hustle while working your 9-5?
